Billy Myles-Berkouwer brings industrial and digital methods of object and
image production into the process of painting. Drawing on technical
practices beyond traditional painting - including coding, 3D design, and
industrial craft - he works from a range of advertorial and reprographic
images sourced from urban environments. Working from these visual
components, Myles-Berkouwer reframes the logic of these images within a
new painted dimension, which blends abstract, gestural painting processes with refined photo-realist painting that appears at first printed but is meticulously painted freehand. This interplay between image and object, context and subject forms the system through which he works.

Responsive yet methodical, his process-driven approach engages with the culture of algorithmic consumption, where imitation, hyper-productivity, and image saturation shape the ways we encounter contemporary media. Myles-Berkouwer is particularly interested in the passivity of contemporary image intake, where fleeting and directionless distribution encourages rapid, accumulative consumption, over sustained reflection. His paintings resist this cultural tendency by granting imagery its own pictorial stage, creating space for closer attention and reconsideration.
