A tumult of form gives way to a sophistication and penetration of composition in Clare Wood’s work, itself born of a most instinctive, physical approach to painting; one that sees Woods engage with paint and the weight of her brush much like the sculptor might manipulate clay. Hersumptuous images and generous signification begin with the liquid swish of her body as it urgently fleshes out the shapes of flora and fauna across her aluminium support. Wet on wet, she invites those tiny parasites of chance and accident to settle upon her surface. Guiding, illuminating, energising, her ground, there is a slick mutation of paint into pattern and then into light that one finds in Wood’s work.
