Georg Wilson knits together various streams of British mythology that relate to its countryside, in so doing asking important questions about historical ownership, land access and, ultimately, class structures. Wilson populates her paintings with a series of creatures; elfin-like, gender-fluid humanoids born of myth and lore that engage with their bucolic environment in charming yet testing ways. Wilson thus replaces the venerable energy of allegory and legend innate to mythology with a contemporary cross-examination of place, status and integrity. All of which is articulated by a whimsical figure that delights in its poetic inchoateness but which, by extension, fuels an uncertainty and anxiety that clearly speaks in the present tense.
