Haroun Hayward’s paintings employ a tessellation of repeated – remixed – ‘scapes, both recollected and collected, serving to create a kind of aesthetic and experiential mantra which turns the act of looking into a visual chant. Often fusing references including personal narratives, techno music and 20th Century landscape painting, his is a strategy of remixing. Working in both dryly etched painterly intaglio and carefully executed watercolour, his surface is phrased through pressure, pigment, and propensity.
Elucidating a mystery often out of a vignette that is familiar, Hayward imposes a metamorphosis of space and meaning that fuels his tremulous compositions. Gentle shifts of light, hue, and geology take shape in his repeated images and in his devotion to the time and space of his composition their forms become inextricably interwoven. Place, protagonist and parable all find their conclusion, lost in the conundrum and quietude of space.
