Tom Halsall’s porcelain brushwork and gentle suffusion of light and shadow restrains the monstrous adaptations he imposes on his painted subject. Transmuting from canny to uncanny with curious likeness, Halsall both characterises and hides a side of his subject by rendering them human in an exploration and discovery of self that is at once a ‘cover up’ of the other.
