Matt Carey-Williams is delighted to present ‘Scene XIV: Nada Elkalaawy, A Stir of Echoes'. Comprising sixteen new paintings by Elkalaawy, this ‘Scene’ explores the concepts of time and memory as seen through the lenses of those lived experiences of loss and grief. As both formal design and emotional strategy, the artist employs strategies of layering to both see back in time and find portent in the present, resulting in a delectably ambiguous articulation that speaks to the iridescence of presence as well as the dark suffocation of that which has passed.
In ‘A Stir of Echoes’ these layers function like painterly veils, fashioned only for the viewer to remove, so that a constant tension between preservation and erasure permeates Elkalaawy’s surface, subject and their ultimate revelation. The result is a haunting presentation that looks how memory recalls: fragmented, inchoate and enigmatic.
Scene XIV: Nada Elkalaawy, A Stir of Echoes will be accompanied by an essay by Carey-Williams, examining and elucidating the artists’ oeuvre.
