Matt Carey-Williams is proud to present ‘Scene XI: a world of dew’, a conversation between two graduate abstract painters, Abbie Horberry and Aaron Kudi.

Horberry and Kudi create surfaces that pulsate with possibility, heaving between forms molecular or cosmic; glacial or volcanic. Sharing an interest in communicating the complexities of space, both these painters make surfaces that ebb and flow in and out of mark and mechanic, announcing paint in dialects geological, biological and even otherworldly as they choreograph their ballets of abstraction.

This Scene, taking its name from Kobayashi Issa’s haiku a world of dew, seeks to examine how Horberry and Kudi, like Issa, apply their chosen media simply and directly yet achieve a deeply textured resonance. Out of less flows more: a sophistication etched across their painted surfaces that touches on the untouchable, elevates everyday experience into the temples of myth and element, and which seeks to distil moments of miasma into matter as Horberry and Kudi revel in their achingly beautiful ‘worlds of dew’.

‘Scene XI: a world of dew’ sets up a conversation between the ephemeral and the experiential; between moments savoured, lost, but then remembered once more: a process and pean that sits at the very heart of Issa’s haiku and which, as energy, chimes so neatly with the searching paintings of Horberry and Kudi.
