Matt Carey-Williams is delghted to present Scene XVI: Dean Fox, Keeping the Books on the Shelf, the artist’s second solo presentation at his space at 12 Porchester Place, London, UK.
Extending to a second space in Connaught Village, this latest body of work, sees the artist continue his treatment of art history not as a source to be quoted but as a system to be tested. Drawing on a range of references - from Impressionism to Symbolism to Fauvism - Fox works in a volatile space where image and surface compete; where figures, interiors, and ornament are held in provisional balance before dissolving into folds of pure abstraction.
Across fourteen new works, colour thickens, spatial cues compress, and the artist’s marks interrupt and redirect inherited pictorial languages. The paintings resist reverence, instead maintaining a state of tension in which order is sustained only long enough to be reconfigured. What results is a body of work that privileges sensation, memory, and subjective experience over description, allowing Fox’s painting to detach from its sources and assert its (and his) own terms.
