Porcelain figurines, kitsch domestic ornaments, and museum artefacts appear enlarged, distorted, or recombined, no longer static relics but charged vessels that hold the weight of history, nostalgia, and desire. Similarly, her recurring use of putti — cherubic figures drawn from Renaissance and Baroque painting — invokes an ambiguous presence, at once playful and spectral, suggesting how cultural symbols and inherited traditions continue to haunt the present. Elkalaawy’s paintings oscillate between tenderness and estrangement, grandeur and fragility. In monumentalising overlooked objects or resurrecting half-remembered figures, she questions how stories are preserved, how meaning clings to material form, and how images slip between documentation and invention.
